The expansion of oil and gas exploration work in Georgia put on the agenda the issue of training specialists with qualified higher education in this field, which did not exist before 1952. In order to provide the oil and gas industry of Georgia with national personnel, on the initiative of Professor Alexander Laliev, in 1952, the "Department of Mineral Exploration" of the Georgia Polytechnic Institute (Georgian Technical University) was separated and the "Department of Oil and Gas Geology and Drilling" was established separately. which trained cadres with the following specialties: "Geology and exploration of oil and gas deposits" and "Drilling of oil and gas wells".

The Samgori oil and gas field opened in Georgia in 1974 made it necessary to train such specialists who would ensure the processing and exploitation of oil and gas fields, taking all of this into account, a new specialty "Oil and gas field processing and operation" was opened.

In 1974, department #70 was divided into two departments - "Exploration and development of oil and gas deposits" - #70 and "Technology and technology of drilling wells" - #88.

Department #70 trained engineers in two specialties: 1. "Oil and gas geology" and 2. "Processing of oil and gas deposits, operation of oil fields and gas storages"’.

Graduates majoring in "Oil and Gas Geology" were awarded the qualification of engineer-geologist, while graduates majoring in "Oil and Gas Field Processing" were awarded the qualification of Mining Technology Engineer.

From its establishment (until 1987), cathedra #70 was headed by geologist - Doctor of Sciences Professor Alexander Laliev, and in 1987-1991 the cathedra was headed by Geol. Min. Doctor of Sciences Professor, Zurab Mgeladze, since 1991 - Candidate of Geology-Mineralogy, Professor Nani Khundadze.

Associate Professor Nikoloz Abesadze, Professor Irakli Goguadze since 1987, and Professor Guram Varshalomidze since 2007 have been appointed as head of the Department #88 of "Well Drilling Techniques and Technology".

Since 2007, both cathedras #70 and #88 have been merged into one "Oil and Gas" Department of Technologies, the head of which was appointed Professor Guram Varshalomidze. The department had two directions: "Processing of natural gas deposits, exploitation of oil and gas pipelines and oil and gas storages" directed by Professor N. Khundadze and "Well Drilling Techniques and Technology" directed by Professor I. Goguadze.

About 2,000 specialists have been graduated from the department. It is rich in educational and supporting literature published in the Georgian language.

The students of the department mainly went through training in foreign oil producing companies: "Canargo-Georgia", "Frontera-Eastern Georgia", "Iori Valley" companies and BP (British Petroleum) pumping and compressor stations.

Currently practicing in Oil and Gas Corporation and existing foreign oil companies.

Currently, the department has 13 qualified employees, of which 4 are full professors, 7 are associate professors, 2 are assistant professors, 1 is a senior teacher, 3 are laboratory assistants.

Since 2007, the level of professional higher education has been established in Georgia, accordingly, the specialties of "Oil and Gas Farming", "N/G Well Drilling" have been created. The students of which undergo training in "Kaztransgaz-Tbilisi", in the International Oil and Gas Corporation, in the service of gas farming in different regions of Georgia.

Masters are trained in the department in two specialties:

1. Geology of oil and gas.

2. Processing of oil and gas fields, exploitation of oil and gas pipelines and oil and gas storages.

30 subjects are studied by the employees in two directions, master's and doctoral studies. In the department there is a laboratory of geophysics, well drilling, since 2009 the laboratory of chemical analysis of oil and gas has been opened. The department is located in the 3rd building of GTU.

In 2012, teaching at the Russian-language undergraduate educational program "Oil and Gas Technologies" began.
