The Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems of the Georgian Technical University is one of the main centers of education in the field of informatics and automation in our country.
The Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems has a long history. Its existence dates back to the beginning of the 50s of the 20th century. The rapid development of science and industry in the country was the basis for the creation of the faculty. In Georgia, scientific and research institutions of various branches of automation and informatization were opened and developed: Tbilisi Institute of Toolmaking and Automation, Automation and Telemechanics, Cybernetics and other institutes. Institutions of this profile were established in different cities of Georgia. It became necessary to prepare personnel of appropriate competence for these organizations.
In 1953, at the initiative of Professor Nikoloz Gabashvili, at the Faculty of Energy of the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia, at the Department of Central Power Plants, a new chair "Automation of Production Processes" was opened, of which Professor N. Gabashvili was elected as the head of the chair. Specialty:
In 1957, the Faculty of Instrumentation was separated from the Faculty of Energy, which was later renamed the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering. Professor Giorgi Tkeshelashvili became the dean of the faculty, and Professor Nikoloz Gabashvili headed the department of computer technology.
Since 1963, Professor Giorgi Tkeshelashvili headed the newly established Department of Automation and Telemechanics, which he headed until 1976. Professor Levan Gachechiladze became the dean of the Faculty of Automation and Computing.
At different times, the Faculty of Automation and Computing (Informatics and Control Systems) was headed by Professor Giorgi Sekhniashvili, Professor Givi Chikhladze, Professor Nodar Lominadze and Professor Zurab Tsveraidze. From 2021, the dean of the faculty is Professor Tamar Lominadze.
From January 1991, the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia changed its status and became the Georgian Technical University. University reforms began. The reform also affected the faculty. Along with the development of computer devices and technological processes, a number of directions have become relevant, terminology has also changed. On initiative of Dean, Prof. N. Lominadze, the Faculty of Automation and Computing was given the name "Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems".
After the reorganization of the Georgian Technical University, in 2005, the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems was joined by the Faculty of Engineering Physics and three departments of mathematics, which made a significant contribution to increasing both the educational and scientific potential of the Faculty.
From 2021, the Departments of Telecommunication and Radio Engineering and Broadcasting joined the Faculty and the Department of Digital Communication Technologies was established.
29 educational programs in Georgian, English and Russian languages are implemented at the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems. More than 4,000 students are enrolled in these programs. Academic education at the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems is three-level: bachelor's, master's and doctoral. After completing each level, the student is awarded the academic degree of Bachelor, Master and Doctor respectively.
Vocational education programs are also implemented at the faculty, as a result of which a diploma of a specialty confirming vocational education is issued.
The students have at their disposal the faculty training-scientific laboratory of Informatics and Control systems named after Zhiuli Shartava equipped with the latest equipment, the modern university engineering physics laboratory, the virtual modeling and construction center, where practical and laboratory classes are held.
The university center for promoting innovative activities of young scientists and students works at the faculty, as well as the student engineering academy for schoolchildren.
International connections with universities were activated at the faculty (West Pomeranian University of Technology, University of Patras, Greece, University of Zagreb, University of Ljubljana, University of Slovenia, University of Bologna, Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania), University of Transylvania (Romania), Mary Washington University (USA), University of Wroclaw, University of Warsaw and Lodz (Poland), Complutense University of Madrid, University of Vigo, University of A Coruna, University of Debrecen (Ungret The University of Debrecen); Rzeszow University of Technology – (Poland) (The Rzeczow University of Technology); the West Pomeranian University of Technology (the West Pomeranian University of Technology), England's Creamfield University, Sweden's Linneau University, Athens University of Technology, etc.) with research centers (Julich Scientific Research Center, Institute of Nuclear Physics, Cern for Neuroscience and Medicine, Keck, Fermilab, etc.).
Students of the faculty actively participate in various international conferences and grant projects, in the international exhibition of education. They won many international student conferences. Students and academic staff of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems and systematically participate in the ERASMUS+ exchange program: Italy, France, Poland, Germany and other countries.
