Paradigms: Veils and Frames

Master's thesis. Theme: Theater on liberty square, 2014

Theme 1: Traditionally there is a clear border between the spectator and the spectated. The project deconstructs this relation. The paradigm for the project is the street carnival traditions of the middle ages, during which mobile stage-platforms transform the city into a giant spectacle; the stage is everywhere and nowhere. The spectator and the spectated constantly switch positions.

Theme 2: Exploring the language of veils; the discourse on corner. The corner is a symbol of firmitas - architectural stability. It has always been an immovable constant point. The framed stages mark the veil covering them; this mark is a sharp corner on the smooth surface of the veil. Since the stages move, the corner moves. The corner becomes a wandering point along the surface.

The project is located in one of the most challenging places in Tbilisi - the liberty square. The reorganized vehicular circulation gives the square to the pedestrians. The main institution carrying the idea of liberty - the theater takes its place on liberty square.
