In 2010, the Department of Liberal Sciences was established at the Faculty of Business Engineering of GTU, the department combined the direction of foreign languages and the newly formed direction of European studies. The Department of Liberal Sciences was the most numerous structural unit of the Faculty of Business Engineering in terms of the number of professors and visiting teachers. Professor Zurab Gamezardashvili was appointed as the head of the department.

In 2011, the study program of European Studies (Bachelor's and Master's) was accredited, the head of the program is Professor Murman Papashvili. Already in September 2012, about sixty entrants were enrolled in the mentioned specialty. It should be noted that at that time it was the first undergraduate study program of European studies launched in Georgia.

Since 2011, a scientific research center for the study of European integration processes has been founded in GTU, on the initiative of Professor Zurab Gamezardashvili. The aim of the center was to carry out scientific research in the direction of European studies and to find the necessary methodical support for teachers and students.

The Department of Liberal Sciences functioned in this manner until 2017. After the reform carried out in 2017, the educational scientific research institute of European studies (headed by Professor Zurab Gamezardashvili) was established, as well as the training and research laboratory for the study and modeling of European integration processes (headed by Professor Nugzar Bardavelidze). Both the mentioned institute and the laboratory provided effective assistance to the students of European studies in strengthening their theoretical knowledge and practical skills; Both the institute and the laboratory functioned until September 2021, when as a result of the reorganization, the direction of European studies and the direction of international relations were merged into a new "Politics and International Relations" department (headed by Professor Tamar Kiknadze).

In the years 2010-2021, many scientific and practical activities were carried out in the direction of European studies, the purpose of which was to promote and stimulate the activities of students and professors of the direction of European studies, to promote European studies and European integration processes in Georgia, to create an appropriate environment for European studies in terms of education and science, to stimulate the study of Europe, as well as in Tbilisi. and to increase the awareness of the specialty of European studies among the students of Rustavi public schools.

Over the past decade, the following thematic activities were carried out by the Department of Liberal Sciences, the Scientific Research Center for the Study of European Integration Processes, the Educational Scientific Research Institute of European Studies and the Teaching and Research Laboratory for the Study and Modeling of European Integration Processes:

  1. Scientific forums and publications - Since 2010, the Department of Liberal Sciences of the Business-Engineering Faculty of GTU and the Scientific-Research Center for the Study of European Integration Processes have systematically held (this tradition is still continuing) international scientific symposia "Georgia and Europe" in order to promote European studies. Selected and peer-reviewed reports are published in the collection "European Studies". In addition to international scientific symposia, the scientific-research center studying European integration processes established a relationship with the Board of Trustees of the Georgian Savannah in Istanbul and jointly held a scientific conference in the Georgian Residence in Istanbul in 2015 and 2019, which was attended by Georgians living in Turkey. Professors of GTU took part in the conference: Nugzar Bardavelidze, Nino Gomarteli, Ketevan Chakhnashvili and Maia Kipiani. In December 2021, Professor Emzar Pazhava was on a scientific business trip to the Georgian Residence of Istanbul;
  2. In 2015-2021, three scientific researches of Shota Rustaveli and one funded by the Erasmus grant were carried out by the professors of the department (Z. Gamezardashvili, M. Papashvili, N. Bardavelidze, Kh. Chapichadze, E. Pazhava) in the direction of European Studies; The mentioned scientific studies were published in 6 books;
  3. Appropriate study course manuals were prepared for the students by the professors of the European studies specialty.
  4. Establishment of a club of European connoisseurs - In the autumn of 2013, the Club of European Connoisseurs was launched (president - second-year student Nini Gelashvili, co-president - second-year student Mariam Bagauri, coordinator Prof. Nugzar Bardavelidze). Under the auspices of the club, the students of European studies were actively involved in the promotion of European integration among young people in this direction. Meetings with high school students were organized in Rustavi public schools, a memorandum of cooperation was signed with the 123rd public school of Tbilisi, events dedicated to Georgia-Europe cooperation were held (student conferences, informational meetings, meetings with students of the 123rd school were systematically held, the so-called "open door days" in GTU);
  5. Thematic events - Meetings with interesting people: diplomats, scientists, writers, journalists organized by the club of European experts; Also, a series of intellectual games were held jointly with the students of Sulkhan-Saba Orbelian University, a number of themed hikes were organized, "get to know the native region";  
  6. Celebration of Europe Day - Since 2013, the members of the European Connoisseur's Club have participated in public events dedicated to Europe Day within the framework of Europe Week. The members of the club organized "round tables" dedicated to Europe Day in Gori and Akhaltsikhe universities in cooperation with the local administration and student councils and with the participation of local students; Also, the members of the club established a tradition that on the Independence Day of Georgia, May 26, with the participation of non-student youth, a humanitarian activity was organized - "Nature Protection Day", within the framework of this activity, cleaning of the forest massifs in the surrounding areas of Tbilisi and Mtskheta;
  7. Student scientific conferences - Since 2012, the Department of European Studies has been organizing republican student scientific conferences dedicated to issues of European studies; Since 2015, student conferences are no longer held separately and have been transformed into a separate section of the International Symposium of European Studies;
  8. Other activities of students and graduates of European Studies - In 2015-2018, students of European Studies were given the opportunity to take part in the weekly programs "Power to the People" and "Honest Conversations" in the "New Georgia" program network of the Creative Union of Georgian Journalists. Systematic participation in the mentioned programs contributed to the professional formation and career growth of European studies students.

Irakli Javakhishvili, a master's student of the first batch of European studies, continued his studies in the international specialty doctorate program of the Thomas Aquinas University of Rome from 2015 and returned to Georgia after the defense of the doctorate degree. In 2020, Irakli Javakhishvili and Mariam Bagauri, a bachelor's student in European studies, jointly prepared and published the book "Church's Social Doctrine Guide". Today, the mentioned work is a helpful guide in the subject "Religion and political processes in Europe". In 2020, a group of graduates of European Studies (Mukhran Shubitidze, Giorgi Shengelia, Elene Bagashvili, Keti Maglakelidze) founded the non-governmental organization "Association of European Studies of Georgia". The association closely cooperates with the Georgian Technical University and engages in quite fruitful activities with young people in the field of promotion of European integration.
