The predecessor of the Department of Philosophy and Public Relations of the Georgian Technical University - the Department of Philosophy was founded in the early 60s of the previous century. It was one of the largest departments of the Polytechnic Institute (the name of the university at that time), which included about 110 teachers, including visiting professors. In those years, the offices of the department included such subjects as philosophy, sociology, psychology, ethics, aesthetics, logic, history of philosophy, history of Georgian philosophy, public and political preparation, etc. Some of them are general university subjects.

In addition, there was a sociological research laboratory with the department, where about 15 employees worked.

From 1962 to 1993, the department was headed by Honored Worker of Georgian Sciences, Knight of the Order of Honor, Professor Vakhtang Gagoidze. The education of many generations of technical intelligence is connected with the name of this respected scientist and teacher. The field of his scientific activity was wide: History of Georgian philosophical thought, sociology, philosophy and ethics of medicine, philosophy of technology, role of science in public life, etc. In addition, Mr. Vakhtang was distinguished by great organizational skills.

At the beginning of the 90s, the cardinal transformations taking place in the country also reflected the life of the technical university: a completely new type of humanitarian and social faculty was created, which was called the humanitarian-technical faculty and at the head of which stood the then leadership of the university (Rector Professor Ramaz Khurodze) and the newly created Dean of the Faculty, Professor A. Tsintsadze and deputy deans, professor T. Jagodnishvili and Professor G. Iashvili. With the initiative of these people, since 1992, many innovative, completely different specialties have been opened at the new faculty, such as public relations (PR), public administration officer, technical journalism, interpreter-referent, conflictology, etc., analogues of which could not be found in the Georgian educational environment. Getting to and studying at this faculty, which had about 6,000 students, was very proud and prestigious.

The changes taking place in the country were also reflected in the life of the university. Since 1993, there have been changes in the life of the Department of Philosophy of the Technical University. The head of the department is professor Vano Chiaureli, whose name is associated with the introduction of a completely new specialty - public relations (PR) in the educational system of Georgia. By introducing this specialty, the department became a profiler.

Since 1995, bachelor's programs, and since 1999, master's programs of the mentioned specialty have become very popular, which was reflected in the ever-increasing demand. In those years, the number of students admitted to the bachelor's program was determined by approximately 100 students each year. There was a similar demand for the master's program. A large number of graduates of this specialty are successfully employed in various responsible positions in Georgia and other countries. For example, the graduates of this specialty are Nikoloz Samkharadze, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Nino Meladze, the regional head of BP of "British Petroleum", Eldar Pirmisashvili, the founder of the strategic communications agency "Peritus", Berdia Natsvlishvili, the head of the USAID project "Harmony", Communications Director of "Arch" Tornike Guruli and many others. In addition, a large number of graduates (7-8 professors) of both undergraduate and doctoral programs in public relations are currently employed in the Department of Philosophy and Public Relations and share their knowledge with students with their youthful attitude. So there is a good synthesis of youth and experience in the department. Here the principle of inheritance of knowledge transfer is respected. During these years, many articles, textbooks, dictionaries and other publications were published by the staff of the department. For example, basic principles of public relations (manual), introduction to philosophy (manual), sociology (manual), logic (manual), psychology (manual), English-Georgian dictionary of marketing terms, etc. along with the introduction of a new, profiling specialty, the name of the department was also changed - It was first named the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, and then, as a result of the structural changes implemented in the university, the Department of Philosophy and Public Relations.

Thus, the department consists of two main directions: philosophy (general university) and public relations (profiling specialty). Qualified professionals who are passionate about their work are employed in the department in both directions. In the near future, it is planned to activate work in both directions: working on a doctoral program in philosophy and completing a public relations (PR) program in English. In addition, it is important to establish international contacts in both directions.

In the pre-Covid period, three students of our specialty were sent to advanced universities in Europe under the Erasmus program. In addition, the nearest plans include participation in international conferences, publication of textbooks, compilations, updating of the work of PR-technologies laboratory, etc.

Public relations students take an active part in the life of the university - in scientific conferences, sports and other events held under the auspices of student days.

During the last two years, remarkable events took place in the life of the Department of Philosophy and Public Relations: Master's (last year) and Bachelor's (this year) programs successfully passed 7-year accreditation.

Finally, relations with students have always been and will be a priority in the work of the department. In this educational environment, students feel in a business and at the same time friendly environment.
