The department combines: the educational program "Energy and Electrical Engineering" undergraduate study modules - "Hydro-Energy Installations" and "Hydro-Electro-Energy", Master's specialization "Hydro-Energy", and doctoral studies.
The scientific interests of the department's employees include research on various types of hydroelectric power plants (including small capacity) and hydro-accumulating power plants, pumping stations, hydropower equipment and systems, and calculation of optimal parameters and modes, as well as research on the issues of improving the theory and practice of reliable operation of oil and gas pipelines, oil product pipelines. They actively participate in scientific conferences. They publish scientific works, textbooks.
Employees of the department participate in solving the problems of hydropower equipment of a number of hydropower plants of Georgia, in the direction of audit and expert assessment of hydropower technology equipment and in other works.
Bachelor's, master's and doctoral students are involved in the department's activities, participating in a number of grant projects, scientific conferences, organizing trips with the department's employees in order to familiarize themselves with the Georgian HPPs.
Based on the concept of priority development of hydropower established in the country, these specialties are currently in high demand and therefore have a wide range of employment. In the near future, this trend will be maintained. Graduates of all three levels of education of the department successfully hold management positions at hydroelectric power stations of the Georgian energy system, pumping stations, water supply facilities, main oil and gas pipeline operating organizations, industrial and commercial enterprises, public organizations, government structures, consulting firms, agencies, international organizations, energy companies, etc.
